Kolkata - First 3 days

Dec 8, 2024 - 3 minute read

I think I forgot to mention that the whole reason we’re out here is that Molly’s sister Cori is getting married. Cori and Rik got legally married back in Minneapolis last year, but this is the big fun version. So the whole next week will have wedding related events throughout.

We were able to nap before getting out and doing some shopping for wedding clothes and a new phone for me. I got a Redmi A4 5G, which I plan to really only use for the next two weeks. It was only about $120.

The house and nearby area

I went out alone to get my steps in at the park across the street, and found that there is a little fair there. It’s supposedly a circus but the only animals I’ve seen are the street cows

The rest of Molly’s immediate family is now here, and we’re all staying at the same place together. There are some common rooms where meals are served and where we’ve played games. There are a few other people staying here as well as a bunch of the staff who sleep on mats.

Food is usually served buffet style, and it is so good. The potatoes in the biryani and one of the meat curries have been my favorite so far. Breakfast is usually yogurt, fruit, and toast.

We checked out the park again just to get our bearings and start acclimating. There are so many people playing cricket or soccer.

We decided to take a longer walk through the streets and found a good sized street market. There are barbers, mechanics, butchers, and so many snack and beverage shops.

The butchers with the meat just sitting on hooks out front is probably the weirdest part of it. Some have live chickens ready to be butchered on the spot.

The street food looks delicious, but after just walking through the meat market, I wasn’t up for trying it tonight.

Our room

Our room has plenty of space for the three of us.

We got a welcome basket with some snacks. The cookies are a bit like ginger snaps, the doritos actually taste like cheese instead of normal doritos (although a really fake cheese), and the moong dal tastes like lays potato chips, but they’re the size of rice crispies. Very hard to eat those without making a mess. The tandori peanuts are a great snack, I’ll be buying more of those.

Cal has his own cool dining table from which he loves to eat Cheerios.

We got to meet the groom’s parents and they brought clothes for everybody to wear to the wedding. They’re super nice and we all had a good time chatting with us. I’ll save the pictures of us in our wedding clothes for later.
